Definitions of Virus, malware related terms;

Computer Virus

A program that automatically starts & copies its self to a computers hard drive and to other computers when possible without knowledge or permission of the owner. Also usually causes problems with the computer.
Originally viruses would spread by floppy disk but now mostly via the internet.

Backdoor

Something that gives a hacker a way into your computer to copy control, record or run things without your knowledge

Spyware

Usually not as serious as a virus, a program that runs when you browse the Internet or do other things – it can track which websites you visit and re-direct you to different websites, advertising or “pop-ups”. Often disguised as a “browser helper” or “add-on” or “search helper” or “toolbar” usually gets installed as a bundle when you try to download something else.

Trojan or Trojan horse virus

A virus that has a small initial install or bundled with another program, but once installed it downloads more and gives access to a “backdoor” (above)

Adware

Something that causes extra advertising to be displayed on your computer – they make money by extra adverts displayed to you. Often sneaks in as a “toolbar”

Ad-aware

A program made by “lavasoft” specifically to remove “adware”

Malware

Similar to spyware and adware but the “Mal” means “malicious” – often causing problems with your computer. Usually a bit harder to remove than spyware. Can also be used as a generic term referring to all different kinds of viruses, adware, spyware etc..

Keylogger

A secret program that records what is typed into a computer and sometimes sends it to a hacker.

Cookie

A file that keeps track of data for websites – like your email address. It is stored on your own computer so it is not a problem to have coolkies. Sometimes company can track your website visits and this can be unwanted.

Browser hijacker

A program that redirects the user to websites with advertising or malware.

Junkware or fakeware

A program that pretends to fix problems and asks for Money but actually does nothing or makes things worse

Ransomware

A program that can keep files encrypted in a vault on your computer and not let you access them or your computer until you pay money. Usually accepts anonymous payments through bitcoin.

Executable

A file that loads a program.

Antivirus, virus scanner

A program that removes viruses and other malware

Vulnerability

A weak spot in the computer – usually software that is not updated

Rootkit

A program that hides its processes in the background of the computer which allows it to run undetected.
