Slow Internet connection? High download usage?
Your computer could be infected with Adware or Spyware.
Industry experts suggest that "adware & spyware"
may reside on up to 90 percent of all Internet-connected
computers.
While the Internet is a powerful resource with a great
variety of useful content, it is also rife with malicious
software, broadly known as spyware. This software, which
often comes disguised as the very same useful content, is
unknown to most users, and it can track your surfing habits,
profile your shopping preferences, and abuse your Internet
connection by sending this data to a third party, all without
your knowledge or permission.
Adware and Spyware can slow your computer down, give you
large amounts of "pop-up" advertising and even
cause your computer to crash.
There has been a new form of Adware / Spyware that we
have noticed on some of our clients computers recently,
be careful that this doesn't happen to you - this is the
common order of events;
a) You are notified that your computer may be infected
with spyware and to download special software to remove
it.
b) You go to download this software and install
it on your computer.
c) When you actually run this software on your
computer it will find a large number of problems, but when
you try to remove these 'problems' the program asks you
to pay for it.
The main problem is that the program that asks you to
pay to remove the problems, actually causes problems! This
program once installed can be extremely difficult to remove.
It is always best to be very careful as to which programs
you download and install on your computer to avoid these
kind of problems.
