The Nasty Secrets that “PC Tune-Up” Programs don’t want you to know…

7 June, 2007 (03:25) | Internet Security, Product Reviews, Software Reviews

As a Professional Computer Consultant, I feel it is my duty to protect people from potential hazards & scams on the internet.

As a mobile Computer Repair technician in Perth, I see hundreds of different Computer configurations. One thing that has concerned me recently is when I see some sort of “Computer Optimizer” or “Registry Cleaner” or “Computer Doctor” or “Tune Up” type program on a PC. I’m sure my client had great intentions when installing the program, but may have been mislead..

Why am I concerned with these programs running on client’s Computers?
First, let me explain the business model behind many of these programs.

How to protect yourself from the “drive-by broadband modem hack”

3 May, 2007 (10:20) | Internet Security

newspaper article routers need protection from drive bys

A new threat has emerged which could cause 50% of broadband router/modems to become at risk from hackers – depending on the websites you visit.

The risk is that people can use this threat to filter your internet access, letting them see which websites you goto and what you type in without you knowing about it.

What causes it to happen? Am I at risk?

“All you have to do to become a victim is simply visit the webpage that hosts the malicious code” … “You don’t have to click OK on any dialog boxes or accidentally download and install malicious software”… So the first step is to be careful about the websites you visit.
Ok, how do I keep myself secure?

what you need to do to protect yourself is to change the default password on your router (your modem or internet connection device). After you do this, make sure you write it down somewhere, perhaps even on a post it-note stuck to your modem/router so the password doesn’t get lost or forgotten.

But how do I change the password?
if you are not sure of how to do this, you can call the manufacturer over the phone or I can come out to help you.
This is another thing I’ll be adding to my PC health and security checklist to keep my clients secure on the net. More and more threats are emerging where hackers intercept your internet connection without you even knowing about it. Its important to get your Computer checked to lower the risk of sleeping threats, Spyware and Viruses at least once every 6 months. You can reach me on 0401 229 104.

Luckily most Computer Repair work these days doesnt require 4 smiling ladies to carry parts around.. Going through my diary, here are some recent jobs ive done around the Perth metro area – From Freemantle through to Clarkson – I do alot of driving with my on-site work..

  • Networking a number of computers to the internet with XP and Vista
  • Setting up a backup system to avoid data loss
  • General Computer Clean up
  • Removing Norton and installing better Anti Virus Software (Nod32)
  • Instructing or teaching a client on how to put together a website
  • Re-installing a laptop with a corrupted Windows XP
  • Setting up a new laptop and connecting it to the internet
  • Installing a new hard drive in a computer that wouldn’t boot or load windows
  • Reconfiguring a ADSL broadband connection so it doesnt keep on dropping out all the time

I hope this gives you an idea of the kind of Computer Consultant / Technician work I do on a regular basis.. I’m happy to chat to you if you think I might be able to help you. – 0401 229 104
