Connecting PCs to Telstra’s NextG Internet Network

What is this “Next G Network or Wireless broadband” thing anyway?
Basically it uses mobile phone type signals to connect to internet.
But don’t I already have wireless broadband?
Well, actually there are two different types of “wireless broadband”
1) Your local one, using your phone line for the internet connection with a router that gives you access within 35m in your home or office.
2) The other type is using mobile phone signals to connect to the internet wherever you are.
Recently I setup 6 PCs for a company that was moving office. Due to a lack of ADSL (broadband) in the area, we connected them through the next g broadband network…
Wireless broadband and IPSEC routing problems (warning: technical talk for I.T. guys)
Originally we were going to have all of the Computers in the local office connect to a VPN through a CDCS wireless router and cisco VPN client software on the machines. Unfortunately IPSEC would only go through on one of the machines on the network. We even tried upgrading the firmware to make the device support IPSEC, but I was unable to get enough information from the VPN provider to get it to work properly.
We ended up getting individual usb cards for each PC. This ended up working ok, but the signal strength is not quite strong enough to maintain a stable connection for hours at a time.
Signal Strength issues
I have had other clients with next G cards that have not had very good reception in popular country areas either - I think these cards really need a decent antenna when you are outside a capital city (or even in the city).
Its a shame the cards are not supplied with even a small signal gaining antenna as I presume that alot of people would get frustrated with the poor signal strength in common city areas.
The future
According to todays paper, the government has approved further development of the WiMax technology, hopefully in a few years time this will be a healthy alternative to the next G wireless broadband connection. I have heard a lot of good things about WiMax. Intel is supposed to be shipping Wi Max devices in 2008
