The Nasty Secrets that “PC Tune-Up” Programs don’t want you to know…
As a Professional Computer Consultant, I feel it is my duty to protect people from potential hazards & scams on the internet.
As a mobile Computer Repair technician in Perth, I see hundreds of different Computer configurations. One thing that has concerned me recently is when I see some sort of “Computer Optimizer” or “Registry Cleaner” or “Computer Doctor” or “Tune Up” type program on a PC. I’m sure my client had great intentions when installing the program, but may have been mislead..
Why am I concerned with these programs running on client’s Computers?
First, let me explain the business model behind many of these programs.
1) Attract user to website, explain there is a free program to check for problems
2) Scan user’s PC, Find problems. (Sometimes legit, sometimes not)
3) Alert the user there are problems on their Computer, make offer to sell program for $99 or whatever, tell them what will happen if they don’t buy and the risks attached.
4) If the client decides to buy – usually the warning will go away and the so called “problems” will be fixed.
Or if the client doesn’t buy:
- If the Company is genuine – The software will be left in the background and not be seen again.
- If they are more aggressive – It will Pop-Up every single time the Computer loads and nag the person until they purchase the program and fix the problem (common and frustrating)
- If the Company is really nasty and has no ethics: Proceed to install Spyware and Viruses on the Computer, once installed – “Sell” this Computer to as a robot to a hacker to use as he pleases.
All that being said, there are some genuine good programs that remove problems on your Computer, but you don’t usually find them by clicking on an advert, like the ones on the right. Some of the programs I trust to use are often Anti-Spyware programs like Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. Even by trying to find these genuine free great programs you can be mislead – I just did a search for “adaware” and some of the sponsored links took me to a different company’s website – See picture.
The links at the top are paid links which do not go to the adaware homepage. These Companies pay to be listed there so they must be making money from it somehow. How do they make money? See the business model explanation earlier in this article.
