Reader Question: F8 Button Computer Problems

8 January, 2007 (05:08) | Computer Tips, Problems Fixed, Keyboards and Mice, Reader Questions

A few days ago, my daughter (8 months) was in my lap, and all of a sudden she jumped upon the keyboard and thereby pressing numerous btns. Now instantly, even though one application was open (which I don’t remember now), a pale blue screen covered up with two gear like image in the middle. Although I can view faintly my desktop and other ikons. On trying atleast on all of the btns on my keyboard, I managed to get free from the pale blue screen. By pressing F8 button.

I thought it was over. Later I had some software problems, so I formatted the whole pc once again.

Now after few weeks, when I was working on Macromedia Flash, I found that it has the same problem. Actually to make a symbol I need to press F8 btn (in Flash). But by pressing so, my desktop got caught up like before. By pressing again, the desktop gets clear again. I’ve no idea how to get free from this error. I don’t know whether it is a technical or software error.”

Dear Sajal,

I am unclear as to whether you are using a desktop or laptop pc, however ill asume it is a laptop.

This sounds like a keyboard issue if your Computer is having no other problems apart from when this key is pressed.
Laptop keyboards often include a special “function” key - often marked as ‘Fn’ which allow you to access extra features. This key may be stuck ON, so when you press the f8 key, it may be loading a specific function on your computer.

I would try pressing down firmly on the “fn” and f8 key on your laptop a few times to try get it unstuck or reset.

Failing that, I’d recommend either buying a new usb keyboard for your PC or, taking your laptop back to the manufacturer for repairs. Good luck.
